You guys ever need to insert an Excel worksheet into a Word document and then have them linked. So that when you update the main Excel worksheet, it then automatically updates the values in the Word document also right? Well, there are actually a couple of ways in order to insert an Excel spreadsheet into Word: linking, embedding, and creating a new one too. If you embed or link, then the inserted Excel spreadsheet will not automatically get updated unless you guys specifically create the link between the two files. Plus, to inserting an existing Excel spreadsheet, you guys can also insert a new Excel object into Word, that basically runs Excel inside of Word itself.

However, this works, there are a number of limitations. One of the most necessary is that if the original data file ever changes, your Word document will never reflect those changes actually.
If either of those issues matters to you guys, there are better ways in order to insert an Excel worksheet into a Word doc.
Insert An Excel Worksheet Into A Word Doc through Copy/Paste
Of course, the easiest way in order to get data from an Excel worksheet into a Word document is just using Window’s copy and paste feature actually. In order to do this, you will open the Excel file with your data, highlight the cells. That basically contains the data you want to bring into your document and tap on Ctrl-C on the keyboard.
If you guys place your cursor into your Word document and tap on Ctrl-V on the keyboard. You will notice that the cells you’ have selected appear perfectly in the Word document actually.
There are a few warnings here.
Well, the imported Excel cells become a Microsoft Word table. So if you wish to format this table after the data is imported. Then you can’t do things such as using Excel formulas or many other Excel formatting features. Well, the second issue is that it only works well for smaller tables of data. If you wish to copy and paste data further down the Excel spreadsheet, then you’ll lose the headers.
This is not really useful. In this case, you’ll want to try one of the options below in order to insert an Excel worksheet into a Word doc rather.
- Pros: Fast and convenient, which is good for small tables.
- Cons: Doesn’t update along with source data, and lose headers on large tables, does not fully conserve original formatting actually.
How to Insert An Excel Worksheet As An Embedded Object
If you want to be able to use Excel functions and many other Excel formatting features later in order to update the table. You’re better off pasting the Excel data as an embedded object actually.
- Choose the section of the Excel worksheet that you want to copy and tap on Ctrl-C.
- In Microsoft Word, just place the cursor where you guys want to insert the data table.
- In the Home menu, just choose the down arrow under Paste and choose Paste Special.
- You guys will see a Paste Special dialogue box appear. Choose Microsoft Excel Worksheet Object and then select OK.
This will basically insert the copied cells into your Word document. The new object won’t behave such as a Microsoft Word table at all. You won’t be able to edit the data inside the table from inside Microsoft Word actually.
But, you can also resize the whole object so that it fits inside the margins of your document. If you want to edit the data, then just double-tap on the object. It will open the whole original spreadsheet inside Microsoft Excel as well.
Keep in mind that this is an entirely new Excel file (not the original). However, any edits that you make and save in that Excel file will update in your Word document as well.
How this works:
- Whenever you use an embedded object in order to paste Excel data, Word basically creates a copy of the original Excel file.
- When you double-tap on the object, Word opens the copied file to edit.
- You guys can use all of Excel’s functions and formatting features in order to make any changes.
What is really nice about this approach is that none of the original formattings gets changed during the conversion to a Microsoft Word table. It also provides you an “attached” Excel data file of the original data file in case you ever wish to modify the data. Or add additional data to your pasted Excel object in Word as well.

How to Insert An Excel Worksheet As A Linked Object
You guys will see that the inserted Excel data looks the same as in the previous section. However, there is a significant difference. If you guys return to your original Excel file and make any changes to the data in any of the cells that you pasted. Then you will see those changes immediately update in your Microsoft Word document actually.
The changes basically take effect in Word even if you guys haven’t saved the changes in the Excel file. This essentially lets you create a live view from Word into changes someone is actively making in any Excel file as well. If you wanted to, then you could use this feature in order to create a real-time dashboard in Word. In order to display any essential data points that someone may change in an Excel file.
- Pros: Fast and convenient, good for large tables, conserves original formatting, and also updates quickly with source data updates.
- Cons: Can’t edit the table directly inside Word actually.
