How to Disable Startup Programs Windows 10

Windows 10 is actually a really fast and responsive operating system. However, if you have a lot of apps set to start when starting up your computer, it can bog down the boot process substantially. Unfortunately, most of the apps that you install will add themselves to your boot process for many reasons. Auto-update being one of the main ones. Regardless, let’s now discuss how you can disable startup programs or apps on Windows 10 and make the boot process fast again.

The more software you guys install on your computer, the longer it may seem to take to start up Windows. Many programs add themselves to the list of programs that actually start whenever you boot your computer. And that list can really get long.

How to Disable Startup Programs in Windows 10

  • Right-tap on an empty area on the Taskbar and then choose Task Manager.

  • Whenever your Task Manager comes up, just click the Startup tab, and look through the list of programs. That is turned on to run during startup. Then in order to stop them from running, right-tap on the program and select Disable.

I actually turn off all of them, however, the few programs that I want to access instantly. Another thing that you need to remember is that whenever you install new software. You then have to go to its options and then set it not to run during startup. Or just check this from time to time and turn off software – especially those that have a high startup impact rating actually.

Well, I most of the time get the question: “Which programs I have to enable?” and the answer is really simple: none! They can all be disabled, and Windows will start up along with no problems at all. But, some of the things that you might want at the ready, won’t be, and also you will need to start them up manually actually.

Turn off Startup Programs in Windows 7, Vista, or XP

For some programs, it is really smart to have them start along with Windows, like anti-virus and firewall software. But, for most of the programs, starting them at boot-up just really wastes resources and also extends startup time. There is also a tool installed along with Windows, called MSConfig. That also allows you to instantly and easily see what’s running at startup and turn off the programs you prefer to run on our own after startup as needed. This tool is also available and you guys can use to turn off the startup programs in Windows 7, Vista, and XP.

Keep in mind that you can use MSConfig to configure many things other than just startup programs. So you need to be careful about what you do with it. If you guys are not sure about using it, then just follow the steps in this article and you should be fine.

In order to run MSConfig, then just open the Start menu and type “msconfig.exe” (without the quotes) in the Search box. When you type, results in a display. When you see “msconfig.exe,” tap on it or press Enter if it is highlighted.


If you guys are using Windows XP, then you can also open the Run dialog box from the Start Menu. And type “msconfig.exe” in the Open edit box, and then tap on OK.

Now press the Startup tab on the System Configuration main window. A list of all the startup programs displays along with a check box next to each one actually. In order, to avoid a program from starting up along with Windows, then choose the check box next to the desired program so that there is NO checkmark in the box actually. Tap on OK when you have made your choices.

A dialog box then displays that tell you that you may need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. Press Restart in order to restart your computer immediately. If you guys are not ready to restart your computer, then tap on Exit without restart.

Turning off Startup Programs in Windows 10 or 8 or 8.1

Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 actually make it really simple in order to disable startup applications. All you need to do is just open up Task Manager through right-tapping on the Taskbar or via the CTRL + SHIFT + ESC shortcut key. Tapping on “More Details,” switching to the Startup tab, and then via the Disable button actually.

You guys may also notice that not all apps and programs appear in the start-up tab in Task Manager. If you’d like to set it so another program, file, or website opens on startup, then you have to follow these steps mentioned below.


In order o begin, tap Windows Key+R to open the run command box. Next, you need to type shell:startup and tap OK actually.

It will take you to a Windows Explorer window. Now, all you have to do is just create a shortcut here for anything and it will then open when your PC starts up. We will run you via some of the examples below.

Start any app On Windows 10 Boot

  • Just tap on the Windows Key+R.
  • Enter shell:startup and then press OK.
  • Right-click in the Windows Explorer window as well.
  • Tap on New and then tap on Shortcut.
  • Tap on Browse… and then you need to locate any program you’d like.
  • Make sure you locate the .exe file actually.
  • Tap on Next, give your shortcut a name, then press Finish.

Just like that, you guys can also search for the .exe file on your PC and then copy and paste the address as well. In order to test that it works, you need to double-tap on the shortcut. If it opens, then it will also open when your PC starts.
