What Is WSAPPX?

Wsappx is actually a service in both Windows 8 and Windows 10. It is also part of the Universal Windows Platform and Microsoft Store as well. However, it typically runs all the time, it mostly uses minimal resources. As you guys can see, wsappx at the time of writing was not really using any CPU or disk resources. However, this number can instantly change whenever you start using the Microsoft Store actually.

The process runs most heavily when installing, updating, deleting, and also running Microsoft Store apps. It also runs when you are installing desktop software outside of the store. Don’t be too worried if usage spikes especially when you guys are installing, updating, or deleting an app actually.

Whenever you are running an app, the process is also responsible to check the app’s license. This is what actually causes usage to rise when you first start using an app.

Why Wsappx Causes High CPU Usage

Well, on Windows 10, the wsappx process has sub-processes that are known as Client License Service or ClipSVC, and the AppX Deployment Service or AppXSVC as well.

The ClipSVC service handles licensing and secures against piracy for Store apps whenever the AppXSVC deploys apps. So it runs anytime you install, update, or also delete an app. Hence, if you turn off either of these services, Store apps that won’t work.

Whenever the sub-processes are active and running, you will see the wsappx process usage increase actually. While wsappx is actually a vital system process, it does not really have to be enabled all the time. It’s only needed whenever you want to install, update, or delete Store apps as well.

Note: If you guys are using a Microsoft Store app and also get an error concerning licensing. Then you have to turn on the ClipSVC and AppXSVC services.

Do You Guys Need It?

Well, yes, you do need wsappx. However, you do not have to leave it enabled all the time actually. You only have to enable whenever you are using the Microsoft Store or installing, deleting, or also updating apps. Occasionally, you may also get an error concerning licensing whenever you are using a Microsoft Store app. If so, you’ will then need to turn on the services behind the process.

The two services that trigger this process basically include AppX Deployment Service and Client License Service. On Windows 8, the latter is actually called Windows Store Service.

Whenever you see wsappx using up a significant amount of your CPU, there are many fixes in order to resolve the issue.

Run a Virus Scan

If you have tried all of the solutions above but the problem still persists. Then you may have to run a system scan actually. Use your preferred Antivirus program in order to perform a full system scan. Some of the antivirus programs have a malware scan feature actually.

After the scan, you will then see if your computer has malware or a virus as well. If you find any, then move to quarantine or remove them. Restart your computer for the changes in order to take effect.  Check if the problem persists or not.

Update Windows

If the Microsoft Store won’t open or there is also a problem along with the program. Then check if there are any pending Windows Updates and then install them.

  • If you want to disable Microsoft Store via Group Policy Editor. Enter gpedit.msc in the search box and then tap Enter in order to open the Group Policy Editor.

  • Then, choose Administrative Templates under Computer Configuration.
  • Double-click Windows Components and then choose Store.
  • Double-tap on Store, and then look for the Turn off Store application setting on the right pane.

  • Also, double-click Turn off Store application in order to open its settings windows and then choose Enabled > OK.

Well, if your Windows version lacks the Group Policy Editor option. Then you can also disable Microsoft Store via the Registry Editor.

  • If you want to do this, right-tap Start > Run.
  • Type regedit and tap Enter to open the Registry Editor as well.

  • Head to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsStore
  • You have to create a new DWORD value in the Windows Store key and then label it RemoveWindowsStore. Type in the Value field. Restart your computer and then check if wsappx CPU usage is minimal.

Note: I won’t recommend you to disable Windows Store if you need frequent automatic updates for apps such as Photos, Calculator, Mail, Movies & TV, and OneNote as well. Additionally, you can’t really install or update third-party Windows Store apps when Windows Store is turned off.

Turn off Automatic Store App Updates

Another way to decrease the wsappx high CPU usage is to turn off automatic updates for Store apps in order to keep them from updating without your involvement.

  • In order to do this, just type Store in the search box and select Microsoft Store in order to open it.
  • Tap on the Menu on the upper right side of the Store window and choose Settings.
  • Then toggle the Update apps automatically slider to turn it Off. This basically permits you to manually trigger app updates.

  • Tap on the menu again, choose Downloads and Updates, and select Get updates to check for updates. If you find any important updates, then just install them.

Note: Remember to check for updates manually is not easy for most of the folks. Additionally, apps are a major part of the Windows 10 operating system. So unless the automatic updates are grinding your system to a halt actually, we don’t really recommend turning them off.

Delete Bloatware and Stop Background Apps

Bloatware and background apps tend to run whenever you don’t want them to, thereby increasing CPU usage on your PC. Removing bloatware makes sure they don’t keep updating in the background and consuming resources.

  • To delete bloatware, just choose Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & Features to see all of the apps installed on your PC. You can also uninstall any app that you guys don’t use including pre-installed junk and many other trash apps.
  • In order to avoid apps from running in the background, then choose Start > Settings > Privacy > Background Apps under App Permissions.

Turning off background apps from running means the app can’t check for new notifications when it’s not in use actually. You can turn off background apps that you never use or toggle the slider to completely disable all of the background apps.

Is WSAPPX a Virus?

The Windows service is basically built into Windows 10. And there have been no reports of malware taking the form of this Windows service actually.

But, if you guys are worried about malware or a virus, then you can run a full system scan using your preferred Antivirus program. This will help you to detect any malware or external threat to your PC.
