Is MMC.exe Is Safe Or Harmful?

If you found MMC.exe executing on your PC and you like to know about it, then you are in the right place. MMC.exe is an MS created file that is built-in in every model of Windows since 2000. This process is secure and shouldn’t be causing any issues under normal circumstances. You don’t want to remove or freak out thinking it’s a malware or virus.

MMC also called “Microsoft Management Console”. However, it uses host component object models named as snap-ins. These constitute different management snap-ins that are accessed from the Control Panel, like the Device Manager.

However, they certainly provide a GUI or graphical user interface for making manual modifications to the Windows Registry. Here is a list of some of the snap-ins that are quite common in Windows 2000 through Windows 8. Some of these can be launched by directly input them into the Start Menu or Run dialog (Windows + R).

MMC.exe Snap-Ins List:

  • comexp.msc
  • certmgr.msc
  • ciadv.msc
  • compmgmt.msc
  • devmgmt.msc
  • dfrg.msc
  • diskmgmt.msc
  • eventvwr.msc
  • fsmgmt.msc
  • lusrmgr.msc
  • ntmsmgr.msc
  • ntmsoprq.msc
  • perfmon.msc
  • rsop.msc
  • secpol.msc
  • services.msc
  • wmimgmt.msc
  • gpedit.msc

If you are not currently executing a snap-in, it is unlikely that MMC.exe will also be executing. MMC snap-in dll links are saved in the Windows registry at:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MMC\SnapIns

Conclusion:

MMC.exe is the core or major administrative process of Windows that should only be executed when a required Component Object Model – aka “snap-in” – is executing.  This process is built-in in every advanced model of Windows and shouldn’t be causing any issues. However, if you are not executing a snap-in and view this process in the Task Manager there might be a chance that it is a malware disguising itself as an otherwise legal service.
