If you have a shield TV of the 2017 model then you don’t need to upgrade except for the remote. The new remote is quite better than the earlier generation. Hopefully, you can also paired the new remote using the old Shield TV, and is sold separately on the NVIDIA website for just $30.

How To Find Your Remote

Well, I think NVIDIA knew the affair between remotes or couches. That’s the reason they chose to add a remote finder feature on the remote. You can then hit a button on the Shield TV to buzz the remote. It simply sounds like a loud enough beep to help you find the remote.

However, if you like to be lazy and don’t like to get off the couch, you can then enable the buzzer from the settings through your smartphone. Head over to Settings> Remote & Accessories> SHIELD Accessories> Shield Remote> Find this remote. Although, remember that if the remote is out of range of a Wi-Fi signal, it will unable to locate it.

Use Another New Remote App

You can also use a mobile device to control your Shield TV or any Android TV. However, for Shield TV 2019, you can simply use the revamped remote app that adds game or app shortcuts and the latest buttons. If you like to set it up, download the app on your Android and the app would simply detect the Shield TV on the same network. With the help of the app, you can input using the smartphone keyboard, control volume, it also offers a power button.

Netflix is the best and offers a dedicated button for it on a remote control is quite common these days. The Shield TV also comes with a massive Netflix button that I don’t use very often. Even though Shield TV offers a reprogrammable button that lets you set it to any action that you want. But I like to remap the Netflix button itself. Fortunately, you can also remap every button on the remote using this app. Do you want more Nvidia Shield tips or tricks? If yes, scroll down below!

The app is known as Button Mapper and it allows you to remap any physical buttons lined with the Android device it is installed on. The app can quite essential on Android TV to remap buttons on the new NVIDIA Shield TV.

The 2017 Shield TV offers a dedicated interface that lets you record the screen and capture screenshots natively, especially for gamers. However, the functionality of screen recording is not present on the Tube variant. However, you can also capture screenshots of the 2019 version. Head over to Settings> Remote & Accessories> SHIELD Accessories> Customize Quick Settings Button> Take a screenshot.

Well, the remote is equipped with IR, the 2019 Shield TV offers HDMI-CEC which enables itself to do some amazing things. For instance, you can also use or set your TV to switch ON and OFF when your Shield Wakes up and went to sleep. If you have various devices attached to the TV, you can then set Shield TV to switch the HDMI source when it wakes up. However, when your TV doesn’t compatible with HDMI-CEC, you can then use the IR sensor to switch on the TV.

NVIDIA also managed to keep the price down for the updated variant of the Shield TV Pro or Shield TV. If we talk about its price then it costs at $150, the tube-style is the best value considering the traditional style Shield TV’s were available for $175 on discount.

Cooling Fan Adjustment

Both Tube or NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro offers a cooling fan built into the device which can often become loud enough to disturb you. You can also adjust the fan speed settings. Head over to Settings> Device Preferences> System> Fan Mode> Cool or Quiet.

AI Upscaling

It might look like a gimmick or trick but it is a legal feature on the 2019 Shield TV. AI-scaling tends to stretch out the 720p and 1080p content to 4K without pixelating the picture via Machine Learning. Also, it comes quite handy if you have a 4K TV but your streaming services are in 1080p. However, the system is implemented in the device so that it works without any issue. You can also enable this feature after moving to Settings> AI Upscaling> AI-Enhanced, Enhanced, or Basic. Do you want more Nvidia Shield tips or tricks? If yes, scroll down below!

Sideload Apps

Sideloaded apps

It would be a waste if you buy Shield TV and don’t sideload any applications to it. One of the perks of owning a mobile device is that you can sideload applications easily and enjoy apps that weren’t even designed for Android TV in the first place.

However, many apps work when sideloaded, if some applications are built exclusively for 64-bit then it might not work. So, if you’re trying to use the Dolphin emulator, I’ll hold my breath.

Navigate Sideloaded apps

Whenever you install an application after sideloading that was not intentionally designed for Android TV, you’d face issues. For instance, the Shield TV remote is not recognized by the applications and therefore you won’t use the apps, at least not without help. Input Mouse Toggle; an app that imitates a mouse cursor on your TV and lets you easily navigate the sideloaded apps with just the remote.

Browse Internet

Some Android TVs are designed for a laid back experience and therefore don’t even add a web browser. You can also sideload the Puffin TV browser that’s meant specifically for Android TV and offers a user-friendly interface. Also, you can install lots of other web browsers on Android TV like Google Chrome, and then use it with the Mouse Toggle app or connect a Bluetooth Mouse and Keyboard.

Set Up Bluetooth Controller

Similarly, you can connect a Bluetooth Keyboard or Mouse to the Shield TV to browse the Internet. Also, you can attach a Bluetooth Gaming controller to play games. However, Shield TV supports PS4, Xbox, and third-party Bluetooth controllers. While Xbox works smoothly, the PS4 controller faces key mapping problems, and third-party controllers’ accuracy varies from developer to developer.

Switch Applications

Rather than all these notable features on the Shield TV, one of my favorite features is the App Switcher. Similar to regular mobiles, you can easily switch between various apps after hitting the home button two times. Easy, right?

Nvidia Shield Tips – GeForce Allows You To Stream Games

Well, Shield TV doesn’t add a gaming controller in the box. It is still like a gaming-oriented device. NVIDIA GameStream or NVIDIA GeForce NOW come built-in using the Shield TV. However, you can install or download your own game streaming applications like SteamLink. However, all these applications make it one of the most robust Android TVs built for gaming.

The Shield TV offers a huge library of Android TV-compatible titles from the Google Play Store. But on the other hand, it also offers different ways to play through its GeForce NOW game streaming service. However, the service is currently available for free on the Shield. You still want to supply your own keyboard/mouse combination or Bluetooth controller for the Shield TV tube. But their Pro variants offer two USB ports that can be used to connect accessories.

‘GeForce NOW’ allows you to connect your Steam or Uplay libraries and stream games according to your taste from an NVIDIA cloud center. Here the game data is beamed down or processed to your Shield TV. NVIDIA also offers a huge collection of free-to-play games and features. All you need to do is to choose games that Shield owners can play and stream for free. Also, there is NVIDIA GameStream (discuss earlier), which allows you to cast gameplay from a computer executing a GeForce RTX graphics card straight to your living room.

Rather than downscaling the standard variant of the Shield TV to the size of a 6-inch tube. The Shield TV is capable of streaming games using GeForce NOW which is the best feat whether or not you ever play them. In case if the given gaming features are very important to you, it’s might worth spending a bit extra for the NVIDIA Shield TV Pro that offers USB ports for connecting keyboards, controllers, to provide a good gaming experience.

Access Hard Disks

Well, the 2019 Shield TV Pro has two USB 3.0 that allows you to access high-quality media content from your previous hard disks. You only need a good quality VLC media player or file explorer to access the whole library. Also, only Shield TV compatible with Plex, so that you can create a Plex Media Server on your device itself and then stream your whole content all over the network.

So, these were some of the best and amazing Nvidia Shield tips, features, or tricks that I explored during my usage. I know that not all the features mentioned on this list are exclusive but cover the whole domain of the Android TV segment. However, features such as remote functions, Plex Media Server, AI upscaling are exclusive to the 2019 Shield TV model. If you want to share anything about it then let me know in the comments sections below.
